Reclaim Leadership.
Its a bold statement, but then vision statements are meant to be. In my classes I talk to students about vision, mission and strategy. I believe that vision is your north star, your guiding principle. And if you do it right, a vision could take a lifetime or more to see through to conclusion (colonizing Mars, eradicating malaria, building cathedrals). I also suggest that a vision statement is best if it is short and to the point. There isn't any room here for hows and whys. That all comes later. This is the core of what your efforts are about. And so... reclaim leadership.
Leadership seems to come up in a lot of what I do. I talk about it in the classroom, it comes up a lot in talking to entrepreneurs and small businesses. And so, I have been thinking (a lot) and writing (some) about it. I continue to feel that Tim Hindle hit the nail on the head when he wrote that leadership is “one of the most observed and least understood phenomena on earth” (The Economist Guide to Management Ideas and Gurus). And I think that lack of understanding comes from a mix up terms and ideas.
And so, I am on a mission to reclaim leadership for everyone; to unravel the confusion and add value and meaning back to the word.
